New Super Mario Bros. U Review (Wii U)

Not even six months have passed, and Nintendo is already release yet another New Super Mario Bros. title to the world. I’m not sure about you, but after New Super Mario Bros. 2 earlier this year I was ready to give the classic series a little bit of a break (at least, the 2D iterations).

The Underclassed pick the 50 best albums of 2012

The Underclassed

AlbumsWhen we did the best of B-sides list the other week, we found it impossible to rank which was best. How do you take an Indie album like for example In The Belly of the Brazen Bull by The Cribs and then compare it to Frank Ocean’s album? I don’t personally think you can rank things in such a way.

So again, because we’re so uncannily hipster (sigh) on The Underclassed, we’ve simply drawn up a list of 50 albums that were pretty damn special in 2012. A highlight for were Tame Impala’s second record ‘Lonerism’, which ticked every single box for me. But there were also superb efforts from Django Django, Field Music, Tall Ships, Melody’s Echo Chamber and Grimes. Here I am, waffling out the list before it’s even thrown at you!

So without further ado, here is The Underclassed’s 50 best albums of 2012!

PostRock Star

As we write the final chapter of the book of 2012, We leave you with our year end wrap up awards that encompasses everything that our site strives to accentuate within the realm of post-rock. It was a huge year for post-rock that saw the return of two of the genres biggest bands and many new bands emerge and make their names known. I’d like to think of 2012 as a year that really saw the genre explode creativity wise, as what is most commonly referred to as the “third wave” post-rock revival seems to be coming to something of an end. While crescendo-core still remains as popular as ever, a lot of bands have begun branching off in different directions exploring exciting new sounds. Where are we headed in 2013? Who really knows, but Postrockstar is optimistic for the future and can’t wait to start helping our readers discover…

Staff Picks – IamHop’s top 10 albums of 2012

PostRock Star

Well…this is awkward, but I’ll introduce myself anyways. Hi, I’m James! I created postrockstar as a way to help smaller bands gain exposure after constantly seeing nothing but the biggest name bands promoted and posted. I’m from Seattle, in my mid-20’s and work for a .com like just about everyone else in Washington State. I have a strange obsession with Pokemon and my favorite bands are Sigur Ros, Cloudkicker, The End of the Ocean, The American Dollar and Collapse Under the Empire…who all happened to put out albums last year. Weird.

1. Sigur Ros – Valtari

Sigur Ros return from hiatus to reclaim their spot at the top of the post-rock genre. This was a no-brainer pick to me as Sigur’s return to a more nostalgic sound did nothing but please their fans. While Jonsi used the band’s time off very well to further his own…

Vooks GOTY 2012: Best Wii Game Winner Revealed – Wii and Nintendo News from Vooks

Written by: VOOK | December 26, 2012

The Wii might not have had one of the biggest years ever but what for it lacked in quantity it made up for quality.

That quality culminated in a little title called The Last Story, a game that at one point was at risk of never coming out of Japan. The Last Story is the best Wii game of 2012 as voted by you.

Here’s what we said about it in our review;

The Last Story is an incredibly well put together RPG that manages to marry everything that makes both western and Japanese RPGs great. Similarly, it provides a very focused and concentrated journey for the player to get through and doesn’t attempt to bog itself down by offering a large and empty landscape just because it’s an RPG. If this is the future of the genre, I couldn’t quite say how I would feel, but with a bit more fine tuning to make the game a bit more difficult and extending the length just a tad with some more optional content, then I’m all in. The more people who play this, the better; this might be the Japanese RPG that wins over the haters of the genre.

Here’s how the Wii results turned out;

  • The Last Story – 39.41%
  • Rhythm Heaven Fever – 14.71%
  • Mario Party 9 – 13.53%
  • Pandora’s Tower – 9.41%
  • Project Zero 2: Wii Edition – 5.29%

Vooks GOTY 2012: Best Multiplatform Title Winner Revealed – General and Nintendo News from Vooks

Written by: VOOK | December 29, 2012

Previously this award was called ‘Not on a Nintendo Console’ award, but this year we’ve been blessed to have a couple of multiplatform titles appear on the Wii U, so it’s a new name for what is essentially the same award.

This award is open to all games that may or may not be on a Nintendo console. So what won? Funnily enough one that came out on the Wii U, Assassin’s Creed 3. Personally I have no idea what’s going on in that game, but you all do so that’s all that matters.

The voting was close though with a lot of games getting votes, here’s the top 10;

  • Assassin’s Creed 3 (360/PS3/PC/Wii U) – 16.17%
  • Borderlands 2 (360/PS3/PC) – 11.98%
  • Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed – 8.38%
  • Mass Effect 3 (360/PS3/PC/Wii U) – 8.38%
  • The Walking Dead (PC/iOS) – 7.19%
  • Halo 4 (360) – 5.99%
  • Sleeping Dogs (360/PS3/PC) – 5.39%
  • Guild Wars 2 (PC) – 4.19%
  • Dishonoured (360/PS3/PC) – 3.59%
  • Diablo III (PC) – 3.59%

Vooks GOTY 2012: Best Nintendo eShop Game Winners – Wii U and 3DS – eShop and Nintendo News from Vooks

Written by: VOOK | December 28, 2012

Originally we were going to do these awards just as one super uber digital download award, but with the quality of games on the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShops having one award just wasn’t good enough.

The winner for the Nintendo 3DS was clear, taking nearly 30% of the combined 3DS and Wii U votes, that game is Fallblox, the excellent sequel to Pullblox which also took out this award last year.

On the Wii U front the voting was much closer but it was still Nano Assault Neo taking home the top award. Congratulations to both winners! Here’s the (combined) results;

  • Fallblox / Crashmo (3DS) – 29.49%
  • Mutant Mudds (3DS) – 10.26%
  • Nano Assault Neo (Wii U) – 10.26%
  • The Denpa Men: They Came By Wave (3DS) – 8.97%
  • Pokedex 3D Pro (3DS) – 7.69%
